2009: A year dedicated to Picasso
Provence and the Côte d’Azur played an essential role in Picasso’s tumultuous life. Now you can follow a touristic and cultural itinerary on the footsteps of Picasso, the great Spanish artist, in Provence - Côte d’Azur! Details are to be posted in a website at this moment under construction www.picassoenprovencecotedazur.com Provence has long been celebrated by painters and writers expressing the luminosity of its light, the sensual climate, the diversity of the landscapes, the beauty of the Mediterranean and countless other aspects.
PICASSO MUSEUM – ANTIBES On the 20th July 2008 this magnificent museum reopened its doors.
The Picasso museum, dedicated to the artist during his lifetime, is housed in the Grimaldi Château with an uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean. The artist, having fallen in love with Antibes and its castle stayed here for several months, set up his studio and created many works here. His works essentially reflect the joy of living. Exceptional donations from artists and the town’s acquisitions have made it possible to create an incredible collection of modern art featuring the works of Gliezer, Ernst, Magnelli, Picabia, Hartung, Arman, César, Klein and others.
The renovated Picasso Museum emphasizes its contemporary focus, yet has preserved the spirit of the strong archaeological memory that infuses the building. The architectural project thus has a double approach – preserving the history of the building while providing the best conditions for conservation of the works and public viewing.

War and Peace at the National Picasso museum– Vallauris The War and Peace works by Picasso were installed in the chapel at the Château de Vallauris in 1959. Picasso chose the chapel for his project of a Temple to Peace, that went along with the strong movement of the 1950’s that rediscovered sacred art. Pablo Picasso was both aware of the profound symbolism of the chapel, and attracted by the strict proportions and severity of the château. The ancient building provided War and Peace – with its clear references to ancient art, even cave art, with a solid, universal foundation. War and Peace was the last major political composition that Picasso completed.
